Caching in Sundsvall

12 10 2013

For the past few weeks it has been hectic at work but things are now starting to quieten down so it was quite in order that I was able to take the day off. One of my geocaching friends had discovered that there are some really cool caches in Sundsvall. Perhaps it was when they (slas, MadChicken72 and Ironhawk67) passed through the town earlier this year in a rented camper van on their way up to North Cape. During the day we were able to find a bunch of around ten caches that had high favourite points, were mostly field caches and in some cases had a certain UE content.

We were lucky in that Thursday October 3 was a fantastic autumn day. The skies were blue and the temperature climbed to around 12C during the day. Obviously, the main thing is that it wasn’t raining, the rest was a bonus. We left Gävle at 7 am in the ds8300 geomobile which had various geoequipment in it that we had some use for during the day and had a leg stretcher in Harmånger so that I could log a cache in the borough of Nordanstig. Having done that I can finally say that I have found a cache in all the boroughs in the county of Gävleborg. It’s only taken me over ten years to do it. We arrived on the outskirts of Sundsvall and promptly attacked The Salvation Army

A great UE experience to start the day

followed by Creature from the Black Lagoon. Each of them took nearly an hour and resulted in MC72 becoming quite familiar with drains. Not easy for a tall guy.

From there we went on to Da Vinci-Koden and this is when we all realised that this was going to be a great day. This was a field puzzle that must have taken many hours to create and cost a fair amount of money as well. It didn’t take long to understand what needed to be done and once we had stopped getting in each others way and formed a couple of smaller teams it didn’t take long before the cameras were in action and the log book could be signed. I hope that this cache doesn’t get muggled as so much work has been put into it and it would be quite an investment to replace it.

By now we were excited about the possibilities of experiencing more great field puzzles. After some discussion we headed off to Södra Berget for food and an attack on the caches in the area. We ate an expensive lunch of the day at the hotel but I guess the view was partly what we paid for.

As soon as we had eaten we went off to find the nearby Mission Impossible: Laikasyndikatet cache. I was impressed and I believe the others were as well. As always in this kind of posting it would be possible to include many details about the cache but that would spoil the experience for the coming visitors.

We moved on down the road and found a couple of the waypoints belonging to The Chronos Case which I think we all really enjoyed and voted as being the best cache of the day.

What an experience! A field puzzle of high class.

In the middle of the hunt we took a break and hunted for Big

Having exhausted the caches on the hill we moved over to the West and found a group of four caches close to Sidsjön. Again we were highly entertained by the inginuity of the CO and the amount of work that had been put into making them robust and fun to use.

Having exhausted the possibilities in the Sidsjön area we moved on north to a couple of caches that had a more UE feel to them. The first one The Book of Eli took us to a great little place that we would never have found on our own.

Our next stop was on Alnön and this consumed quite a time for us as this was a great place to visit. I am convinced that there are many more such places nearby but local knowledge of the area is invaluable. War Diary

By now it was dark and the perfect to time to hunt for Det hemliga rummet We took a rather difficult route up to the secret room but as it usually the case found an easy route back down to where the car was parked.

Unfortunately, we had to miss the final cache on our list as hunger was given priority and we stopped in Hudiksvall for a well earned pizza before driving back home to Gävle, satisifed with a great day of caching in Sundsvall. I for one will be back for another day of caching in the area as the caches we found were just some of the ones that had been awarded many favourite points. Something to look forward to!
