Vår tid i Hedemora

29 05 2014

Spring has turned into an early summer, at least in the part of Sweden where we live. It was a blistering 29C on Saturday, just right for a day of caching in and around Hedemora. A couple of members of the usual team of Slas, Madchicken and Ironhawk67 weren’t available so Ironhawk67 and I teamed up with Olleoljud and Eligirly for the day. As we started off from Gävle quite early we were in Hedemora with plenty of time to spare before we needed to head out to Norns Bruk where the event was to be held. We spent half an hour picking up a few centrally located caches and claiming a few Ingress portals for the faction that Sealr0x belongs to. That done we headed out to Norn and arrived there right on time at 10 am. We weren’t the last to arrive but the place was crowded! The first people I met were BandLEngström. Nice to meet other bloggers especially those that have such great geocaching adventures. I can see that I need to travel more. 🙂

As expected the event was a great feat of coordination among the enthusiastic and prolific geocachers from Hedemora and area. After the welcoming formalities, the spokesperson for the event Svedjan, presented a special prize for a geocacher who had qualified for GC41RZ4 – Challenge #144 – Alla Traditionals i en kommun. I had qualified and found the cache last year but there was a difference in the effort needed to qualify. I had found all thirteen (13) caches in the borough of Ockelbo but vw bus had found over a thousand (1000) caches in the borough of Hedemora to qualify. Talk about making things difficult for yourself! Well done vw bus!

A table full of TB’s and geocoins was visited at the same time that coffee and sandwiches were imbibed. It was a daunting task and I don’t think that I was able to log them all.

We had decided in advance that we would spend the day hunting for quality caches with lots of favourite points rather than an FTF race against the many FTF hounds that we know congregate at such events. As we were in such a pleasant yet industrial historically interesting place we spent some time wandering around the close by GC1Z0GH – Norns hytta before driving back to Hedemora where 3/4 of the team were in urgent need of sustenance.

I made another Ingress loop around Hedemora making myself a nuisance to the local opposition. 🙂 finding a couple of caches and getting a couple of DNF’s as well. The most frustrating cache had a logbook in plain sight but inaccessible as the Tourist Office it was located in was closed!

After lunch we headed directly to Hedemora Gammelgård. This Wherigo took us about 20 minutes to complete and worked well even though a couple of members of the team couldn’t install it on their smartphones and I had forgotten to download it to my Oregon. Luckily Ironhawk67 was better prepared so we were able to find the cache. Great fun.

We then continued further out ot town picking up Gasen i botten on the way. It would have been great to have seen a real TT race when they were held here. All we saw were a bunch of gokarts but even there it was full speed.

Just up the road there was an NFC cache GC3CDWM – Hedemora Communication – Needed For Cashing! which was fun to try so I could confirm that my Nexus 7 had a functioning app and set up but it was a shame that the cache itself was just a micro on a traffic sign. There is a lot of potential to create a better cache of that type. Now there’s an idea!

Other fun caches we found during the day (not in any particular order) included
GC296GH – Dalaros Vägkrog
GC3EDD2 – Har du tålamod?
GC4QW2X – Jurtjyrkogården
GC34YC8 – Mjölkkrukan i Ladan
GC3GK8P – Fd Skog

My camera decided not to cooperate so I don’t have as many photos as usual. They are not in any particular order and there are no intentional spoilers.
